The consultative workshop was held at Uttarakhand State Council of Science & Technology (UCOST), Vigyan Dham, Jhajra, Dehradun on 04th February 2017. The workshop was attended by well-known scholars, former administrators and subject experts who have come together to create a collaborative initiative towards research, policy-making and working with the concept of sustainable Uttarakhand. The contextualization address of the SDFU workshop was held at Bhakuni conference hall at UCOST which was chaired by Dr. B S Burfal (Councilor SDFU) and co-chair by Shri STS Lepcha (Councilor SDFU). The topic of the session was “Climate change & its consequences on Natural Resources”.
The first lecture was delivered by Shri Jai Raj (PCCF, Forest Department) on the topic of “Forest fires in Uttarakhand'' mainly expressing concern over the forest fires of 2016 that caused major damage to the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The second lecture was delivered by Shri. Samir Sinha (CEO, CAMPA) on the topic of “Man-animal conflict issues in agriculture: findings from the annual session of NASI, Dehradun2016'' mainly raises issues of improper dumping and disposal of kitchen and solid wastes and stresses on strategies for solid waste management and man-animal conflict on how there was a data gap in the agriculture losses that had been done by the animals as there had been no study and no research done in this field so far. The next lecture was delivered by Shri Yogal Kishore Pant (Add. Secretary, Rural Development Department) on the topic “Challenges in livelihood among mountain communities amidst present ecological and environmental scenario” presenting the statistics on decadal demographic rates, literacy and worker force.
Many other lectures were delivered by Dr. J.K Bisht (VPKAS), Dr. Debashish Mandal (Senior Scientist, ICAR-IISWC), Shri Mahendra Singh Kunwar (Secretary HARC), Er. R D Singh (National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee) and Shri Krishan Singh Rautela (Technocrat and Councilor SDFU).
The session ends with remarks from Smt. Vibha Puri Das (Former Secretary, GoI) that diversity is really the strength of hill agriculture and thereby concluded the recommendations that will be considered and formulated later and the workshop ended with the vote of thanks given by Shri STS Lepcha (Vice Chairman, SDFU).
